How do I control a cable box located in a closet?

I installed a flat screen on the wall and want to place my cable box on a shelf in the laundry room, which is directly on the other side of the wall as the TV. I am handy enough to run wires thru the wall if needed. I don't want to buy a pricey remote that works thru walls. I am looking at installing a remote extender / repeater do I need? Any suggestions? Thanks.
