How is the military (army) housing for officers?

My husband is getting ready to be in the Army--as an officer (he has a BS in nursing) he has direct commissions as a nurse and is going into the CRNA (nurse anesthetist) program at Ft. Sam Houston. Anybody know about the on base housing for officers in this area-or just on base housing for officers in general (we are a family of 5--not sure if that makes a difference). Would it be better for us to use the off base housing allowance? Any answers to any degree are welcome:) Thanks!
