Does the word "dire" also means terrible, awful, dreadful, bad, etc?

People here have said that dire does not mean terrible, awful, dreadful. or bad. That the word means serious, desperate, or urgent. However, when I look the word up in thesaurus, it states dire as being terrible, awful, etc...?
