Cabinet hardware repainting... primer, paint, clear coat?

I am repainting the hardware for our kitchen cabinets. They were a gold/bronze metal finish and I now painted them black (wrought iron look) I primed them times 2 coats and painted them times 2 coats. Now i'm wondering if i need to put a clear coat on them. Is it necessary? Home Depot never mentioned that but my brother suggested it. ??? Thank you!
